Smart Enters Chinese Market, Can it Compete with the Clones?

by admin on April 14, 2009

A  smart ForTwo is looks very much like a cars on Chinese, one might be forgiven for thinking that they had been on sale there for years. However,  it turns out the diminutive city car has never been officially offered for sale there. There are plenty of local manufacturers building lookalikes at cut-rate prices which could actually pose a problem for Daimler.

The ForTwo is being priced in China from $22,000 to an astonishing $29,000.  The Chinese masses are unlikely to leave the local brands with prices as low as $6,500. However, there are undoubtedly some who will go for the real thing, even at a premium price.
